Autumn sightings

Posted by Rossen

Autumn came and it began with the miracle called "Autumn bird migration".

In September, the most impressive observation was the 11 Dalmatian pelicans migrating through the valley of the Struma River. There followed the usual observations of migrating flocks of Black-headed Gull, watched the first of the autumn migration flock of Lapwings. Since the beginning of September for a month Blagoevgrad wetlands were resting place for migratory Osprey.

In October I had the opportunity to visit the National Park "Gran Sasso" in central Italy and to do some interesting hikes and field observations of typical species for the Apennine mountains.

Monte Camicia - 2564 m.

Monte Tremoggia - 2350 m.

Dente del Lupo

Red-billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax)

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina)

In November, the most significant observation in Blagoevgrad wetlands was 1 male Red-crested Pochard, which stuck to the shallows and are not bothered by human presence in the area. At the end of the month first Coots and other performing vertical migration as a Eurasian Wren and Water Pipit were established in Blagoevgrad wetlands. With observation of the Merlin in the Blagoevgrad plain in late November ended one of the most exciting seasons associated with the migration of the birds.
