Observation of rare waders

Posted by Rossen

In late August I had the opportunity to observe rare waders migrating through the valley of the Struma River. The little flock of four Black-winged Stilts (one young and three adult  birds) used wetlands near Blagoevgrad for accumulation of food base before re-take south to wintering areas.

Migration of gulls over Struma river

 Posted by Rossen

The beginning of autumn migration, as always, began with observations of flocks of gulls over the Struma River. On 17.07.2011 a flock of 18 Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus) migrated over Blagoevgrad wetlands, followed by a small flock of 9 immature Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus), among them and one immature Little Gull (Larus minutus).

This spring, the observations of migratory Osprey over Blagoevgrad wetlands was not rarity. A total of five separate sightings of Osprey make in March and April. The most exciting observation was in April of Osprey hunting, which stays around for a week.

Eurasian Golden Plover

Posted by Rossen

On 13.03.2011 observed four of migrating Eurasian Golden Plover in Blagoevgrad wetlands on the sandbar formed after the last flood of the Struma in December 2010. Bad weather during the day were apparently forced the little flock to stop and use the site to accumulation a food base before again make the long way to breeding grounds in the tundra. This is the first recorded observation of Eurasian Golden Plover in Blagoevgrad wetlands.
