Trekking and impressions from the past weekend

Posted by Rossen

At the end of July it was time for serious trekking through the high part of the Rila Mountain. The heat in the city led me to seek the coolness of the high mountain in the hope of interesting new observations in the wild. Endpoint of my trekking was a little known and visited by tourists subalpine lake under Golyam Mechi peak.

Previously, an unexpected and impressive observation of Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was a great start of  the trekking. The bird flew out from the old Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests west of Kilero peak (1820m.) and soaring went to Argachka river valley (NP "Rila").

Unfortunately, these old forests are now subject to forestry activities, although they are proposed for inclusion in future Natura 2000 protected area "Rila-Buffer" for habitats protection of the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) in Rila Mountain.

In the second part of the trekking, the path passed along the Blagoevgradska Bistritza river

The sun came out briefly and revitalize wild inhabitants of the mountain. On the path to Makedonia Hut, an Water Ringlet (Erebia pronoe), (42° 2'40.40"N  23°24'33.37"E), used the sun to get rid of the morning dew. This species has a restricted range in the country and is found only in the high mountains.

Here on the mountain pass (2183 m) between Gorna Kadiytsa peak (2342 m) and Golyam Mechi peak (2617 m), the bad weather change my plans and it was time to descend into the lower part of the mountain.

Finally seriously darkened and had to go home.
